Reading a material take-off
A take-off lists every component by quantity and unit, then prices each one. It is the document that separates a real estimate from a guess, and it is what lets you compare two contractor bids honestly. If one bid is $2,000 cheaper, the take-off shows whether they used thinner underlayment, skipped ice shield, or simply have lower overhead.
Quantities here scale from a dataset calibrated per square, with a waste factor matched to the material. Slate and cedar carry 18% because their cuts waste more; membrane systems carry 8% because they roll out in wide sheets.
Material cost as a share of the job
On a standard asphalt replacement, materials are roughly 40% of the total and labor about 55%, with permits and disposal making up the rest. As you move up in material grade that ratio inverts: on a slate roof, material can exceed 60% of the job even though slate also takes far more labor hours per square.
This is why cheap material rarely produces a cheap roof. The crew hours barely change between a 3-tab and an architectural shingle, so the saving is limited to the material line while the lifespan difference is ten years or more.
